I've studied the bussing scheme thoroughly. We have tried moving around Thunderbolt ports. All good suggestions, but I think I've covered those bases. I've lost too much time and hair to these crappy rigs. If anyone has any insight of what the problems could be, please let me know. They were quite slow, and on big sessions we really had to be careful managing resources, but at least they were stable.
We've spent a small fortune on upgrading to these systems from old Mac Pro 1,1's with HD3 systems. Plug-ins are up to date and there's nothing really esoteric there. Sometimes we can go a few days with no crash, but other times they happen several times per hour. That being said, we've never seen them crash without ProTools running. We only use these computers for studio work, so Pro Tools is pretty much always running. The crashes/freezes are not repeatable by any action. I'll get the first computer back from Apple hopefully in the next day or so, but don't expect to see any change. And while they've had it, the other system has been acting up more. they can find nothing wrong with it, but apparently replaced the GPU's to be safe. sent the more problematic Mac Pro back to Apple. went back and forth with AVID support for a month or two. Please note that it is often necessary top open Avid Core Audio Manager first before launching iTunes or QuickTime in order to get proper playback through HD/Native hardware.We have two almost identical HDX rigs that have been TERRIBLY unstable for far longer than I'd like to admit. This procedure will resolve the issue in many cases. Now right-click the HDX/Native card in AMS and see if the "Use this device for sound output" is available. If it was open when you first tried to select HDX/Native in AMS, please quit AMS and relaunch it after quitting Pro Tools. Make sure Pro Tools is completely closed. I right-click on Avid HDX in the Audio Devices page of AMS, but the option to "Use this device for sound output" is greyed out. I want to play Core Audio applications such as iTunes and Quick Time through HDX (or HD Native) hardware. This article details a work-around for this issue.
